Frontline Excellence Award application

The Frontline Excellence Award recognizes and celebrates women working on the front lines of mining operations—those who demonstrate excellence, resilience, and leadership in roles that are often underrepresented and physically demanding.

Previous recipients of the Frontline Excellence Award are not eligible for nomination again.

Criteria

Nominees should be women who:

  • Work in field-intensive, operational roles.
  • Demonstrate consistent excellence and impact in their work.
  • Serve as role models or mentors within their teams or communities.

Examples of Eligible Roles

  • Underground and open-pit miners
  • Heavy equipment operators (e.g., scoop, haul truck, jumbo drill)
  • Mill operators and process plant technicians
  • Maintenance trades (e.g., electricians, mechanics, welders)
  • Blasters and drillers
  • Surveyors and ventilation technicians
  • Field-based safety coordinators
  • Hoist operators and shaft technicians
  • Mobile equipment mechanics
  • Field technicians (e.g., environmental, geotechnical)
  • Warehouse/logistics operators (field-based)
  • Supervisors, crew leads, and field trainers

Candidates can either be nominated or self-nominate for the Award. Nominees must be women and must be Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents at the time of their accomplishments. Nominators and Nominees do not need to be members of the Women in Mining Sudbury Chapter; however, they are encouraged to become members through the Women in Mining Sudbury website.

The Nominee will be judged on the following criteria, which should be addressed in the cover letter:

Excellence in Operations

  • Shows innovation in solving problems or improving processes.
  • Maintains high safety and quality standards.
  • Consistently adheres to industry best practices and standards.
  • Shows pride and professionalism in their role.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Contributes positively to the success of projects and operations.
  • Goes above and beyond what is required.
  • Takes initiative to improve systems, safety, or efficiency.
  • Leads by example, even if not in a formal leadership role.
  • Shares knowledge and mentors colleagues.
  • Builds teamwork and collaboration on-site.

Resilience & Commitment

  • Demonstrates perseverance when faced with operational challenges
  • Shows long-term dedication to their role and to the mining industry.
  • Has successfully overcome personal, professional, or industry-specific barriers to excel in a frontline position.
  • Acts as a role model through their consistency, work ethic, and commitment to the success of their team

Please include the following document in the attachments section:

  1. Cover letter describing the Nominee’s achievements and contributions to the Canadian mining industry as described above (max two pages)
  2. Optional: Up to three (3) letters of support for the Nominee

Selection of the Frontline Excellence Award recipient will be made by the Award Selection Committee and will subsequently be approved by the Women in Mining Sudbury Board of Directors, whose decision will be final. Selection will be based solely on the documentation submitted.

All results will be made public in October 2026, and candidates will be informed accordingly. Recipients and the Awards will be celebrated at the 2026 Mining for Diversity Gala in Sudbury.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@wimsudbury.com.

The deadline is October 4, 2026, at 17:00 ET.
